DVB 102 Week 1
(Image 1-5)
#oneperday2023

This week is the first week of the unit, and it will be focus on drawing and style exercise. This will be the first 5 images for the assessment 1 portfolio.
Image 1: Make Your Mark Exercise
Technique used: Line Drawing, Dotting, Colouring
Materials used: 2B Pencil, Colour Pencil, 0.8 Fine Line, Alcohol-based Marker, Crayon and Watercolour
Process: I drew a 8x6 grid and try out different materials with different pattern to observe the difference of texture and quality of each materials provided.
Reflection: With the first 4 materials with a harder tip, I find it more easy to control and draw a consistent shape or line; and with softer tip materials like crayon or watercolour brush is harder to control and draw a consistent pattern. However, I found out that the harder to control the tool, the easier for me to draw a smoother mark that covers bigger area.
Image 2: Observation Exercise 1: Line Drawing
Technique used: Contour, Line Drawing
Materials used:  0.8 Fine Line
Process: I drew the outline of 5 items I found on my desk which is a Vaseline, Thermal Flask, Tissue Box, Scissors, and my Watch.
Reflection: I find it very hard to draw the outline with an item that has a smooth edge like the vaseline and the edge of the watch face. By adding the line just makes it look like a sharp edge but without the line makes it even not natural so I just draw the line.
Image 3: Observation Exercise 2: Drawing Shapes
Technique used: Shape Painting, Silhouette
Materials used:  Alcohol-based Marker
Process: I drew the shape of same 5 items, and by drawing few more time adding layers to create the shadow of the object to add a little bit of shading to the image.
Reflection: It is quite hard to draw the shape without any guideline or outline. But I was a bit worried that the marker could not create a deeper colour for the shading at first but after I coloured it few more layers, the shading came out pretty noticeable so I was glad that worked.
4. Observation Exercise 3: Combine Shapes and Line
Technique used: Outlining
Materials used:  0.8 Fine Liner
Process: I used a 0.8 Fine Liner to draw the outline of the shapes from the previous image
Reflection: After adding the outlines, I found out that I could improve on the ratio and angles of the items. The items I drawn are more on what I think and not what I saw that's why some are like 2d and some are mixed between 2D and 3D which make it weird. I asked my tutor Chris for some feedback and he noticed my tissue box was kinda wrong so showed me isometric and axometric drawing technique to draw a better cube and also can be used to draw other shape more realistic.
5. Observation Exercise 4: Drawing Negative Space
Technique used: Shape Painting, Outlining, Shading
Materials used:  Watercolour, 2B mechanical pencil, 2B pencil
Process: I studied the reference image and found out the foreground are the 3 vases and the plant in the big vases, so I tried my best to trace the outline of the foreground with watercolour then fill in the background to create this negative space which left the foreground white colour. Then I used a mechanical pencil which has a finer tip to outline the foreground objects. Finally, I use a pencil to draw some shadings of the objects and draw a harder outline with some finer details of the objects to make a clearer image.
Reflection: The first time I draw a negative space image was in studio class which I found it really hard to match the shape and sizes by just drawing the outline. So when I draw this, I tried to draw it as slow and as accurate as I could so the ratio with the reference image won't have a huge difference. However, I think I still have a lot of improvements on the shading part which I feel like it don't look realistic enough.
